The Historical Medical Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia holds multiple collections of materials related to the life and work of the prominent 19th century physician and writer Silas Weir Mitchell.
This site contains the fully digitized content of three of those collections. The content is organized, when possible, according to the arrangements outlined in those collections’ archival finding aids (which can be viewed online from the link in the navigation bar above). Consulting these finding aids and searching using the series/folder level descriptions is likely the best way to find materials related to a specific subject/person. A link to the search form can be found above in the navigation bar.
If you are interested in browsing the content, hierarchically structured links mirroring the organization of the collections are also available by following the browse link, located above.
We invite you to celebrate not only the release of these collections but also Mitchell’s 191st birthday on February 15, 2020, by submitting short-form fiction, essays, commentaries, poetry or drawings that explore the varied aspects of Mitchell’s life and work. Select submissions will be posted in a special edition of our blog, Fugitive Leaves. Written pieces should be no more than 1300 words long. For more information, contact Beth Lander, College Librarian, at email@example.com.
Additionally, if you find that you are interested in other material related to Mitchell held at the Historical Medical library but not hosted on this site, let us know, as further additions to this site may be considered based on researcher need.
